OUXX OX021 Work Boots Review: Can These Waterproof Steel Toe Boots Replace My Favorites?
Welcome back, friends, to Surviving the Daily. I hope everyone is surviving well!
When we talk about everyday carry, we spend plenty of time discussing knives, flashlights, multitools, wallets, bags, and all the other gear we carry throughout the day.
But there’s one piece of gear that I think we overlook far too often.
Our footwear.
For someone who spends most of the workday on their feet, a good pair of boots can make a tremendous difference.
After 30 years of working on my feet, I’ve tried my share of work boots. Some were inexpensive. Others cost hundreds of dollars.
And one thing I’ve learned is that spending more money doesn’t necessarily guarantee a better experience.
That’s what brings us to today’s review of the OUXX OX021 Waterproof Steel Toe Work Boots.
OUXX Footwear sent these boots into the channel for testing. Today we’re taking an initial look at their features, construction, fit, and comfort before putting them through approximately one to two months of real-world use.

Why I’m Looking for New Work Boots
For the last nine months or so, I’ve been wearing a pair of Herman Survivors work boots.
And let me tell you something: these boots have seen better days.
But that doesn’t mean they haven’t served me well.
In fact, this is my second pair of the same style, and they’ve been among the best work boots I’ve owned during my 30-year career.
I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on expensive boots in the past, and some of those didn’t hold up nearly as well as these inexpensive Herman Survivors.
Unfortunately, the specific style I’ve been wearing has been discontinued.
That puts me in a difficult position.
I could simply buy another model, but when you spend your days standing and walking, finding comfortable footwear isn’t something you want to leave entirely to chance.
That’s why I was interested when OUXX Footwear contacted me about testing a pair of their work boots.
Introducing the OUXX OX021 Work Boots
OUXX offered to send over their OX021 waterproof safety boots, and I was happy to check them out.
One small detail worth mentioning is that the model number shown on the box appears to be OX2721, while the model OUXX identified in our correspondence and product listing is OX021.
For clarity, we’re referring to these as the OUXX OX021 throughout this review.
These boots are designed with several features intended for demanding work environments, including waterproof leather, steel toe protection, puncture-resistant midsoles, and slip-resistant outsoles.
Those specifications certainly sound promising.
But the real question is how well they’ll perform after spending long days on my feet.
OUXX OX021 Features and Specifications
According to the product information and packaging, the OUXX OX021 includes the following features:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Model | OUXX OX021 |
| Upper Material | Oiled nubuck leather |
| Water Protection | Waterproof construction |
| Toe Protection | Steel safety toe |
| Additional Toe Protection | Rubber protective covering |
| Midsole Protection | Kevlar puncture-resistant midsole |
| Outsole | Slip-resistant, rugged tread |
| Electrical Protection | Electrical hazard rated |
| Safety Standard | Manufacturer claims ASTM F2413-18 compliance |
| Closure | Laces with YKK side zipper |
| Interior | Cushioned construction |
Those are some useful features for a safety boot, particularly for people working around moisture, slippery surfaces, and other workplace hazards.
Of course, specifications are one thing. Actually wearing them for weeks is another.
Waterproof Oiled Nubuck Leather
The OUXX OX021 uses oiled nubuck leather for its upper construction.
OUXX advertises these boots as waterproof, which is especially important for my work environment.
I’m frequently around liquids and wet surfaces, and having boots that help keep my feet dry is a necessity rather than a luxury.
The leather has a traditional work boot appearance, with that familiar tan finish and contrasting black padded collar.
From a visual standpoint, I think they look pretty good.
What remains to be seen is how the leather and waterproof construction hold up after extended exposure to everyday working conditions.
Steel Toe Protection
The OX021 includes a steel safety toe designed to provide protection against workplace impact and compression hazards.
There is also a rubber protective covering over the toe area.
I particularly like seeing an additional protective layer in this area because the front of a work boot can take quite a beating.
Whether it’s bumping into equipment, rubbing against surfaces, or general wear and tear, the toe area tends to show damage quickly.
The protective covering may help reduce some of that cosmetic wear, although we’ll need more time with the boots to see how it performs.
Kevlar Puncture-Resistant Midsole
Another feature that caught my attention was the Kevlar puncture-resistant midsole.
OUXX advertises this construction as providing additional protection against puncture hazards from below.
That’s an important feature for work environments where sharp objects or debris may be present.
The boots are also advertised as complying with ASTM F2413-18 and offering electrical hazard protection.
Those are manufacturer claims, and anyone purchasing safety footwear for a specific workplace should confirm that the boots meet the requirements of their employer and the hazards involved.
Slip-Resistant Outsole
One of the most important features for me is slip resistance.
My work environment makes it absolutely necessary to have footwear that provides dependable traction.
The OUXX OX021 has a fairly aggressive outsole design with deep tread and substantial-looking lugs.
Just looking at the bottom of these boots, the tread is pretty impressive.
The construction also includes cushioning materials that appear intended to provide support during extended wear.
But I’ll reserve judgment on real-world traction and long-term comfort until I’ve actually put some miles on them at work.
YKK Side Zipper
One feature that I appreciate seeing is the YKK side zipper.
The boots have traditional laces, but the zipper provides an additional way to put them on and take them off.
That could be a convenient feature for anyone who regularly changes footwear before or after a work shift.
YKK is a recognizable zipper manufacturer, and I’m interested in seeing how the zipper mechanism holds up over time.
OUXX OX021 Sizing: Pay Attention to the Fit
Here’s something important that I want to emphasize.
Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s sizing chart and actually measure your feet before ordering.
I normally wear a size 11 boot or sneaker.
However, with the OUXX OX021, I ended up going with a size 10.
That was the better fit for me.
Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone should order a full size smaller.
Feet are different, and sizing can also depend on the type of socks you wear.
If you’re wearing thick insulated socks or wool socks, that could affect the size you need.
My recommendation is to use the sizing chart provided by OUXX rather than automatically ordering your usual size.
Initial Comfort and Break-In
OUXX advertises these boots as requiring little or no break-in period.
I’m always a little skeptical of claims like that.
In my experience, even comfortable boots often need a little time before they feel completely natural.
During my initial handling and fitting, the OX021 boots felt comfortable.
The more I wore them, the more I started getting used to the fit.
However, I suspect I’ll still need a day or two of actual work use before they fully settle in.
That’s not necessarily a negative. It’s simply something I want to observe as the testing continues.
Warranty and Customer Support
The warranty information included with my boots listed:
- 7-day free return period
- 30-day free exchange period
- 6-month manufacturer’s guarantee
As always, check the current terms directly with OUXX before purchasing, since return and warranty conditions can change.
What I’ll Be Testing Over the Next 1–2 Months
This video is only the beginning of the review.
OUXX sent these boots into the channel with the understanding that I would provide an initial hands-on video followed by a more detailed review after extended use.
And that’s exactly what I intend to do.
During the coming weeks, I’ll be paying particular attention to:
- All-day comfort: How do they feel after spending an entire work shift on my feet?
- Slip resistance: How well does the outsole grip the surfaces I encounter at work?
- Waterproofing: Do the boots keep my feet dry during normal working conditions?
- Durability: How well do the leather, stitching, outsole, and rubber toe covering hold up?
- Zipper performance: Does the YKK side zipper continue working smoothly?
- Break-in: How long does it take for the boots to become fully comfortable?
- Overall value: Would I purchase another pair with my own money?
I also want to see how these compare with the Herman Survivors I’ve been relying on for so long.
That will be the real test.

Initial Impressions: Are These Boots Ready for Work?
So, what do I think of the OUXX OX021 so far?
From an initial inspection, there’s a lot to like.
The waterproof oiled nubuck leather looks good, the outsole has an aggressive tread pattern, the rubber toe protection is a welcome addition, and the YKK zipper should make the boots easier to get on and off.
I’m also pleased with how the size 10 fits, particularly because I normally wear an 11.
But I want to be very clear about something.
I haven’t completed the long-term testing yet.
I can’t tell you how these will feel after weeks of work, how the outsoles will wear, or whether they’ll hold up as well as my discontinued Herman Survivors.
That’s exactly why we’re going to put them to work.
I’ll return with a more detailed follow-up after approximately one to two months of real-world wear.
And we’ll see whether these OUXX boots really deserve a permanent place in my workday.
