I Tried Building a Full EDC Kit at Walmart for $10
Everyday carry does not have to be expensive, but in 2026, it is getting harder and harder to build a useful EDC setup on a very small budget.
So I went into Walmart with a simple challenge: could I build a complete everyday carry kit for $10 or less?
Spoiler alert: I failed.
But only by $1.88.
In total, I spent $11.88 plus tax. I am not including tax because that varies depending on where you live, and some states do not charge tax at all.
Even though I missed the $10 target, I still think this turned into a solid budget EDC setup.

The Challenge
The goal was to walk into Walmart and find enough useful items to make a basic everyday carry setup.
I wanted items that could cover practical needs like fire, writing, light, note-taking, utility, and general pocket carry. It was not about building the best EDC kit possible. It was about seeing what could be done with a very small budget.
Item 1: Bic Lighter
The first item I picked up was a Bic lighter for $1.74.
This was the only single Bic lighter I could find in the store, which is why it ended up being pink. Honestly, that might be a benefit because nobody is going to steal it.
It is also made in the United States, which is a nice bonus.

Item 2: George Bandana
Next was a George bandana for $2.00.
A bandana is one of those simple EDC items that can do a lot. It can be used as a handkerchief, sweat rag, improvised wrap, signal cloth, filter pre-screen, or general-purpose cloth.
This one is 100% cotton and large enough to be genuinely useful.

Item 3: Budget Penlight
The third item was a small aluminum penlight for $2.32.
It puts out 25 lumens and includes batteries. While 25 lumens is not a lot by modern flashlight standards, it is still enough for basic close-range use.
For a budget Walmart EDC kit, a simple light is better than no light at all.
Item 4: Pen + Gear Gel Pens
For writing, I picked up a two-pack of Pen + Gear gel pens for $1.74.
I like gel pens, and while I had not used this exact version before, they felt decent enough for the price.
For everyday carry, having a pen is still useful, especially when paired with a pocket notebook.

Item 5: Pen + Gear Pocket Notebooks
Next was a three-pack of Pen + Gear pocket notebooks for $2.32.
These are similar in size and style to Field Notes-style notebooks, making them a great budget option for lists, notes, reminders, measurements, and daily use.
For the price, getting three small notebooks is a solid deal.

Item 6: Mainstays Paring Knife
The final item was where I took the biggest liberty: a Mainstays 3.5-inch paring knife for $1.76.
This is obviously not a traditional pocket knife, but it does come with a plastic sheath and can handle basic cutting tasks.
The knife was sharp enough for general utility and everyday cutting needs. It did not perform like a proper EDC knife, and the cutting geometry is different from a standard pocket knife, but it works well enough for this challenge.
Because the sheath is a little loose, I would use a hair tie or rubber band to help keep the knife secured so it does not come loose in a pocket or bag.

Total Cost
- Bic lighter: $1.74
- George bandana: $2.00
- Penlight: $2.32
- Pen + Gear gel pens: $1.74
- Pen + Gear pocket notebooks: $2.32
- Mainstays paring knife: $1.76
Total: $11.88 plus tax
Did I Succeed?
Technically, no.
I set out to build a $10 EDC kit and ended up spending $11.88 before tax.
But in practical terms, I think this challenge still worked. For under $12, I ended up with fire, light, writing tools, notebooks, a cloth item, and a cutting tool.

Final Thoughts
This Walmart EDC kit is not fancy, premium, or perfect.
But it is useful.
And that is the whole point of budget EDC. It is not about having the most expensive gear. It is about carrying tools that help you get through your day.
I will be carrying this setup for the next week to see how it actually works in real life.
