ThruNite T5 Review: This Looks Familiar…

ThruNite sent a new-to-me flashlight into the channel, and this one might ruffle a few feathers.

This is the ThruNite T5, a compact rechargeable EDC flashlight with USB-C charging, a magnetic tail, RGB modes, a rotating head, and a form factor that may look very familiar to anyone who has spent time around the EDC flashlight world.

In other words, this video has a little bit of “what came first, the chicken or the egg?” energy.

What Comes in the Box?

The ThruNite T5 comes with the usual basics you would expect from a compact rechargeable flashlight.

  • ThruNite T5 flashlight
  • USB-C to USB-A charging cable
  • Directions
  • Split ring
  • Silica packet

The light has a hard anodized finish and is made from aluminum alloy.

The Familiar Form Factor

The moment the ThruNite T5 comes out of the box, flashlight people may notice something familiar.

The general layout, size, rotating head, and form factor invite an obvious comparison to the Wuben G5.

That is really the elephant in the room with this light. The ThruNite T5 and Wuben G5 are not identical, but they are close enough in overall concept that people are going to talk about it.

ThruNite T5 Specs

The ThruNite T5 measures:

  • Height: 2.44 inches
  • Width: 1.53 inches
  • Thickness: 0.7 inches
  • Weight: 65 grams / 2.29 ounces

Other specs include:

  • IPX6 water resistance
  • 1 meter drop resistance
  • 523 lumen max output
  • 1,750 max candela
  • 83 meter max throw
  • USB-C charging
  • Magnetic tail
  • 180-degree rotating head
  • Non-removable, non-replaceable battery

The exact battery size and type were not listed in the transcript.

Charging and Carry

The ThruNite T5 has a USB-C charging port hidden behind a rubber cover.

It also has a magnetic tail with two magnets, which makes it useful for sticking to metal surfaces when you need hands-free light.

The pocket clip is stationary and single direction.

I am not especially in love with the pocket clip, but I am also not a huge fan of the Wuben G5 pocket clip either. Both lights could be better in that area.

Controls and Mode Selector

One thing I do like on the ThruNite T5 is the mode selector.

The light has a selector with options for:

  • Off
  • Spotlight
  • RGB / white light modes

There is also a charge and charging indicator around the button.

The button itself has a nice tactile feel.

White Light Modes

The ThruNite T5 has several white light modes.

  • Firefly: 0.2 lumens / 188 hours
  • Low: 4 lumens / 18 hours
  • Medium: 65 lumens / 3 hours 50 minutes
  • High: 158 lumens / 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Turbo: 523 lumens / 43 minutes

Turbo mode reaches the listed maximum output of 523 lumens, though it appears to step down over time.

The light also includes strobe.

RGB and SOS Modes

The ThruNite T5 also has RGB modes.

The solid colors include:

  • Red
  • Blue
  • Green

The red, green, and blue solid modes have roughly a two-hour runtime.

There is also a flashing RGB mode, affectionately referred to in the video as “felony mode,” along with an SOS mode.

No matter which color you leave it in, the SOS mode uses that selected color.

ThruNite T5 vs Wuben G5

The ThruNite T5 and Wuben G5 have very similar overall form factors.

The Wuben G5 is rated at 400 max lumens, while the ThruNite T5 is rated at 523 max lumens.

The Wuben G5 has a max runtime of 50 minutes on its highest setting, while the ThruNite T5 has a listed turbo runtime of 43 minutes.

For low output:

  • Wuben G5: 2 lumens / 65 hours
  • ThruNite T5: 0.2 lumens / 188 hours

For weight:

  • Wuben G5: 52.3 grams / 1.84 ounces
  • ThruNite T5: 65 grams / 2.29 ounces

The specs are not identical, but the lights are close enough in size and concept that they feel like they live in the same neighborhood.

What I Like About the ThruNite T5

I like the selector on the ThruNite T5.

I also like the tactile button. It feels better to use than the Wuben G5 button, which can be a little more difficult to actuate.

The T5 gives you a solid mix of modes, including useful low output, turbo, RGB, SOS, strobe, and a magnetic tail.

What I Like About the Wuben G5

On the Wuben G5, I like that the USB charging port is hidden under the slide switch.

I am not a huge fan of the side switch itself because it is easy to actuate, but I do like that charging port placement.

Final Thoughts

The ThruNite T5 is an interesting little flashlight.

It has a compact body, 523 lumen turbo mode, RGB lighting, a rotating head, USB-C charging, a magnetic tail, and a tactile button that I actually like.

But it also looks very familiar.

If you are a fan of the Wuben G5, you may have strong feelings about this one. The two lights are clearly similar in overall concept, even though there are differences in specs, controls, weight, and output.

So let me know what you think.

Is the ThruNite T5 just another take on a useful form factor, or is it too close for comfort?

And as always: don’t steal, folks.
