Today we are taking a look at the Maxpedition Jumbo Novo Plus.

This is a much-anticipated redesign of the classic Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack, which was released over 20 years ago. One of the things I have always appreciated about Maxpedition is that they seem to take customer feedback seriously and work it into future designs.

With the Jumbo Novo Plus, it feels like we are looking at 20 years of customer feedback rolled into one updated sling bag.

And honestly, this thing is pretty awesome.

Maxpedition Jumbo Novo Plus Overview

The Jumbo Novo Plus is built as a rugged, highly organized sling-style Versipack with pockets, attachment points, and layout options all over the place.

The bag shown in the video uses:

What Is a 24-Hour Pack?

For this video, I packed the Jumbo Novo Plus as a 24-hour emergency pack.

This is not a bugout bag. It is not a get-home bag. It is not meant to be a full long-term survival setup.

The idea is much more focused: if I get lost, hurt, or stuck in the woods, this pack gives me enough supplies to hopefully last around 24 hours, or longer if needed, until help arrives.

This setup is built around a few major categories:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Fire
  • Shelter
  • Medical
  • Navigation
  • Lighting
  • Basic tools

Front Pocket: CAT Tourniquet

One of the front pockets feels almost like it was made for a CAT tourniquet, so that is exactly what I put there.

This keeps the tourniquet easy to access without having to dig through the main compartment.

Front Gear: Multitool, Ferro Rod, Whistle, and Optics

On the front section, I packed a multitool that includes a ferro rod and other useful survival functions.

I also included a whistle and a pair of compact optics, the Nocs Zerotube.

The zippers are smooth enough that I could open the bag one-handed, which is always a good sign.

Wurkkos HD17 Headlamp

In one of the side pockets, I carry the Wurkkos HD17 headlamp.

For a 24-hour emergency pack, lighting needs to be easy to access. If I get stuck outdoors after dark, I do not want to dig through the bottom of the bag trying to find a headlamp.

Water Bottle Pocket

The Jumbo Novo Plus has a dedicated water bottle pocket, and I really like this feature.

The pocket expands to fit a larger bottle, and it includes elastic cordage to help secure taller bottles. There is also a zipper to help close and contain the bottle pocket when needed.

In the video, I used a 24-ounce bottle to show the pocket size.

CCW Pocket

On the back of the bag, there is a large concealed carry pocket with hook and loop inside.

I do not have anything in that pocket for this video, but the space is large and could accept a compatible holster or organizer setup.

To show the size, I was able to fit a full 24-ounce bottle inside the CCW pocket.

Water Treatment

Inside the main compartment, I carry water treatment.

That includes a Sawyer water filter and Katadyn water purification tablets.

For a 24-hour emergency pack, water treatment is one of the major categories I want covered. Even if I start with a water bottle, having a way to filter or treat more water gives the kit a lot more flexibility.

Medical Kit

This kit is rated for up to two people for two days, and it gives the bag a solid foundation for basic emergency medical supplies.

Navigation: Map and Suunto Compass

I also included navigation gear.

That means a map and a Suunto compass.

For a woods emergency pack, this is one of those categories that is easy to overlook because so many of us rely on phones. But if the phone dies, breaks, loses signal, or takes a bad tumble into a puddle, old-school navigation still matters.

Food: Pepitas / Pumpkin Seeds

For food, I packed pepitas, also known as pumpkin seeds.

For a compact 24-hour pack, I do not need a full pantry in the bag, but having calorie-dense food makes sense.

I personally think pepitas are one of the best compact food options you can carry.

For shelter, I packed a few lightweight items.

Fire Kit

I may be a little redundant when it comes to fire starting, but I would rather have backup options.

In this pack, I included:

Mora Knife and POM Pepper Spray

On the side of the bag, I carried a Morakniv fixed blade knife and POM Industrial MK3 pepper spray.

The Mora gives me a reliable fixed blade cutting tool, and the pepper spray adds another layer of personal protection.

Bottom Attachment Points

On the bottom of the Jumbo Novo Plus, there is elastic webbing and additional attachment points.

You could use this area for an umbrella, a small roll-up item, a sleeping pad, or other gear.

For this trip, I used it to carry a tripod.

Carry Comfort

The way I like carrying the Jumbo Novo Plus is on my back.

With the shoulder pad, it is very comfortable. You can also wear it on your front or on your side.

The only real complaint I have is the waist strap. When I wear the bag on my back, the waist strap feels like it wants to crawl up toward my ribs. When I wear the bag on the front, the waist strap feels better.

I just wish it had a little more adjustability.

Final Thoughts

The Maxpedition Jumbo Novo Plus is a seriously capable update to the classic Jumbo Versipack idea.

It has rugged materials, genuine YKK zippers, Duraflex hardware, tons of attachment points, a great water bottle pocket, a large CCW pocket, plenty of organization, and enough room to build a compact 24-hour emergency pack.

I really like this bag.

There is a lot going on with it, and every time I look at it, I find another pocket, loop, strap, or attachment point I missed the first time.

My only real complaint is the waist strap when wearing the bag on my back. I wish it had a little more adjustability because it feels like it wants to ride up toward my ribs.

Other than that, this is a very strong option for a 24-hour survival pack, woods emergency kit, compact sling bag, or upgraded Versipack-style carry setup.
